German and Kenyan officials have signed an agreement to promote the recruitment of skilled Kenyan workers who can fill gaps in Germany’s labor market, and to facilitate the repatriation of Kenyans who don’t have the right to stay in Germany.

Germany and Kenya on Friday signed a migration deal during a visit by Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto to Berlin amid growing efforts there to curb the number of unauthorized entries to the country.

Germany, the richest European nation, has a labour deficit due to its aging population while Kenya has a labour surplus due to its huge youth population. With an ageing and shrinking workforce, experts say Germany needs about 400,000 skilled immigrants each year.
