The Taliban has suspended polio vaccination campaigns across Afghanistan, the United Nations announced Monday. News of the suspension was relayed to U.N. agencies right before the September immunization campaign was due to start.

Pakistan has a new polio case this week, according to the weekly report from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), while healthcare workers in Gaza have completed the first week of a massive vaccination campaign in the war-torn region.

As officials prepare for the second round of the campaign, health workers take stock of the project amid conflict.

The first round of the polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip has been successfully completed, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday. More than 560,000 children under the age of 10 have received a first dose of the vaccine,

Last month, the first case of polio in Gaza in 25 years was recorded as a ten-month-old baby was paralysed due to the disease.

"We admire all the health teams, who conducted this complex operation," Tedros said, also voicing gratitude to the families for turning out in droves to get their children vaccinated against polio.

This campaign comes at a critical time. In early August, the UN health agency reported poliovirus had been found in Gaza’s wastewater, and weeks later the first confirmed case of polio in Gaza was reported in a ten-month-old boy.
