Texas officials designated a Venezuelan gang as a "foreign terrorist group" and endorsed Donald Trump's claim that many migrants crossing into the U.S. were released from prisons in Latin America.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has directed state police to focus on a violent Venezuelan crime syndicate that has gained attention amid a divisive presidential election. Tren de Aragua started as a South American prison gang but has grown into an international organization that dominates human trafficking and has proliferated in Texas in recent months,

Abbott’s announcement comes as Donald Trump has campaigned against “migrant crime” and pushed exaggerated claims that the gang took over a town in Colorado.
